History

The Roses competition began back in 1965 when the Vice-Chancellors of the respective institutions decided to put on a boat race between the crews of Lancaster and York. The rivalry was fierce and although York won the very first boat race, the competition has now evolved into a much bigger event with over 40 different sports, 120 different matches and well over 1500 competitors and both sides continue to pursue victory.

This year is the 49th year of the competition and York are hosting this incredible tournament once again. The competition has been very close over the years with the score currently being 23 wins to Lancaster and 24 to York with one draw, back in 1974. Lancaster emerged as champions last year and we need to win this year to draw the score level ready for the 50th Anniversary next year. With so many different students being involved in Roses, be it sports teams, societies or the student media it is one of the highlights of the year, and in 2013 this is set to be no different. So please, get stuck in and see this historic rivalry resurrected once again!
